DIY Moana Inspired Maui Fish Hook

I’m back with another tutorial for you guys.  Like I mentioned before we previously celebrated my daughter’s 10th birthday (you can find the tutorial here).  The party was Moana themed – which is one of our favorite movies so far.  We decided to make our own Maui Fish hook.  I’m very proud of my girl because she did the majority of the project herself and I think she did a phenomenal job!

What you’ll need…

  • White foam board (Dollar Tree)
  • carboard
  • Brown Marker or paint
  • Glue Gun and sticks
  • white painters tape (dollar tree)
  • White paint (found at craft stores)
  • Tan felt fabric

Directions…

First thing she did was google Maui fishhook images and freehanded the fishhook pattern onto cardboard.  We then used that as our template to trace and cut the rest of the cardboards. The cardboard pieces we had were from purchases we made during the year, we just store them in the garage until we need them.  We used 4 brown scrap cardboard and 2 white foam boards that we used as the outer part of the fish hook.

Next we glued all the hooks together and taped it to together for added security.

Next we painted the the fishhook white and allowed it to dry.  Tip: we applied several coats to the fish hook to make it seem more seamless but you can still see the  tape.

We also cut strips of felt and glued it to the fish hook handle (try saying that 3 times fast!) Drew some scroll patterns though out the Fish Hook and that’s it, your done!

Full disclosure:  We had everything we needed to make Maui’s Fish Hook on hand.  If we had not this would of cost us a total of $5.00 (paying for the felt, paint, white foam board, tape and cardboard) which is still not bad! When we started this project we had a few minor set backs.  The tape we used kept unraveling – I’m guessing it’s because we used Dollar Tree white tape and it didn’t have a strong adhesive to it.  Also make sure to buy white acrylic paint from the craft store, we had some in hand but it was Pearl white and completely opaque (ugh).  Other than that we had a great time working together!

Make sure to come back for our 3rd project.  Moana’s boat and oar as a photo prop!  Thanks for watching guys!  If you decide to create your own Maui Fish Hook make sure to share it on instagram and tag me @hipncreative or use the hashtag #hipncreative.  Until next time guys, have an awesome day!
