DIY Moana Inspired Boat and Oar (prop)

So today I’m sharing my third Moana Inspired birthday project; my DIY Moana Boat and Oar.  If you haven’t seen my other two Moana party decor/props you can check it out here and here.

We wanted to create a  prop for the family to take fun photos with the kids. This project was a bit time consuming but the end result was well worth it.

What you’ll need (for the boat)…

  • Long Cardboard box
  • glue
  • brown paper roll (From Homes Depot – used for flooring)
  • tape
  • red paint (optional -craft store)
  • box cutter
  • white fabric (for the sail)

What you’ll need (for the Oar)…

  • Paper towel rolls
  • Cardboard
  • tape
  • brown paper roll (from Home Depot – used for flooring)

Boat Directions…

The first thing we did was tape the boxes end to end (length wise).  Next we drew a cut line to create the shape of the boat.  Very very carefully cut the boat using the box cutter.

Then we taped down the pieces using the brown paper roll (from Home Depot).  We decided to add the Moana heart of the ocean logo to the boat for added flair.

For the sail: we drew the heart of the ocean on an old blanket that I was going to trash since it was ruined, but I decided to keep it for this project -I’m so glad I did!  We taped the fabric to the brick wall using left over heavy duty double sided tape we bought from Home Depot.

There you have it, the boat and sail all pretty like with my two babies proudly posing!

Oar Directions…

First we drew then cut the cardboard shape (about six pieces), we went with an oval shape and added a ‘neck’ to insert it to the pole (or paper towel roll) and taped it down securely.

Next we lined the oar head with the brown paper liner and taped it.

We did decide to paint the oar a tan color (totally optional) and even added Maui’s signature (my daughter’s idea)!  Cool eh?  I think so!

There you have it folks!  Our very own Moana boat and oar prop!

Here is the birthday girl and her sister happily posing with the props, which looks so cool BTW!  Just don’t tell them I’m showing you this pic I promised I wouldn’t 😉 *insert sinister laugh*

Thank you so much for joining me today and if you do get a chance to create this project, make sure to share your mad skills with me on instagram and tag me @hipncreative or use the hashtag #hipncreative  -Until next time guys, I hope you have a truly great day!
