5 Ways to Stay Motivated Cleaning

5 ways to Stay Motivated Cleaning

You ever have one of those days where you just don’t have the motivation to do anything?  I’m usually one to get up and get things done but there are days where I just don’t have it in me.  Usually when it comes to cleaning my home I have a cleaning schedule that I try to stick to but on occasion I do fall behind or have other priorities that cleaning becomes last on the list.

When that happens there are some steps I take to stay motivated cleaning. With the world being kind of at a stand still (thanks coronavirus), I thought I’d take this opportunity to share the 5 ways to stay motivated cleaning your home!

  1. Create a Routine
In Creating a routine this will help you to stay on top of your chores. I made a printable that I stuck to an old binder. Every day I open the binder and go down the list of chores I need to do for the day. Although I do these steps daily it is a great reminder of what other tasks need my attention. And in cleaning daily what used to take me 30-45 minutes of scrubbing becomes 15 minutes of maintenance, freeing up time for family, friends and socializing (when we can).
  2. Organize your Cleaning Products
I have my cleaning supplies organized under my kitchen sink. I recently got myself a cleaning caddy to help transport my cleaning supplies from on room to another. Having an inexpensive caddy can help you move throughout your home more efficiently since you carry all of your supplies and zip in and out of each room.
  3. Have Discipline
For a home to be clean and organized, you have to have a disciplined mindset. It’s not so easy for me to want to clean every day because of the countless things going on but I do it because I know that my future self will be so glad I did. In cleaning an area in your home it becomes easier to maintain thus less stress.
  4. Ask for Help
In asking for help from your family members this will help you to do other tasks that need your attention. Not everything has to be done by you and you alone. Let your spouse or s/o do the dishes, have your kids vacuum. This will give you back your time and they will feel great helping out as well. They can’t read your mind so asking them to help will let them know what needs to be done. It may not be done as you’d do it but every bit of helps counts.
  5. Do it in small increments
When you first start out cleaning, make sure to clean in small 15-20 minute bursts. Set a timer and when the timer goes off move on to the next thing on your list. Initially you will want to clean the room entirely but if you do that you will burn yourself out and not have motivation to do anything else. By cleaning everyday for a few minutes it will be easier to move on to the next thing. If you have a hard to clean area I recommend you clean other easier jobs, then come back to the heavy cleaning and dedicated more time to it. But once it’s clean add it to your schedule so it doesn’t build up again! Before you know it, you have cleaned several spaces a day versus one room and done.
  6. Take a day off – (BONUS TIP but IMPORTANT!)
Definitely give yourself a day or two off from cleaning and household chores. Honestly I think it’s healthy, just like you get weekends off or vacation days at work, you can give yourself a break from the monotony of cleaning day to day. When you come back to cleaning you will feel a sense of refreshed energy. And you won’t mind cleaning as much!
