How to Renovate Old Doors for UNDER $20 | Hip ‘n Creative

Hey friends, I hope you’re all doing well this beautiful Monday!  Today I’m sharing how we turned our hold doors into a fresh modern door with just a few simple tools.  I have to be honest and say that this project was easy and cheap.  Especially since we had most of the tools on hand.

DOOR RENOVATION PROJECT

You will need…

  • Paint of your choice
  • paint brushes
  • Trim
  • Liquid nails
  • spray paint of your choice – for the hardware

On hand/Optional

  • Sander (optional)
  • finishing nail (optional)
  • clamps or painters tape to hold down the trim while they dry
  • horses or a stand for the the door to rest on

The first thing I did (after taking down my door) was to remove the hinges and door knob then sanded it down.  This is totally optional, I did it because the doors we had had a lot of bumps and scratches and this would help us to paint without too much showing through.

Once we sanded the doors, we then proceeded with our first layer of paint.  We then measured how we wanted our trim to look.  This trim we bought was from Home Depot and cost about $1.29/sq. foot.  We bought four 8 foot pieces which was enough for us to use on 2 doors.  We measured about 6 inches from the top of the door.  My wonderful husband then helped with the cutting of the trim.  (because I’m totally a chicken when it comes to big machines lol).

We added some liquid nails to the back of the cut trim and held them in place with clamps.  Since our doors are a bit warped we decided to add some finishing nails to keep them in place.  (We were concerned that the trim would fall off in the future)  We also added some caulk to fill in any gaps that were showing from the door and trim.

We finished off the door with a second coat of paint.  We also spray painted our hardware with some matte black spray paint.  I absolute love it and thinks the doors look way better than before.  I managed to video tape some of the painting process and have it below.  If you haven’t done so yet you should head over to my Youtube channel.  I post new videos every week and it would mean so much to me to have you there.
