HOW TO REMOVE AN AWNING
A few months ago my husband and I realized that our roof was in bad shape. One day while out running an errand we noticed that some roofing debris on our lawn, after some checking we realized that our roof was in really bad shape. We got an estimate and hired a roofer to replace our old roof as well as the awning in front of the house. So we put our back patio project on hold for a minute to remove the awning and clean up the mess.
REMOVING THE AWNING
With the help of my eldest daughters boyfriend, my husband Harvey was able to take down the awning in just a few hours. We first started with removing the patio decor and furniture. Then removed the main awning cover by unscrewing it and cutting down into pieces.
One of the easiest ways for them to remove the awning was to cut down the awning to small size. He used a crow bar to release the awning from the supports and cut the patio cover with a Ryobi reciprocating saw.
We continued to do that and were able to remove the patio cover in two larger but manageable pieces. We then moved on to remove patio cover supports with our Ryobi impact wrench and Ryobi impact driver to remove the bolts and fasteners. Some of the bolts were in odd places and needed to be reached with a Dewalt Impact ready swivel attachment.
The supports were too long and needed to be shorten so we cut those as well with the Ryobi reciprocating saw so they fit in the truck. The iron railing needed to come down as well. We started by removing any bolts holding it down and removed it by cutting it into pieces with a grinder equipped with a cut off wheel. It was enough cutting that we had to use 3 wheels to get it all removed.
When we finally got all the pieces down we contacted someone on next door app that came to pick up the awning within 20 minutes of our call. He was very professional and a really nice guy. He is a general contractor that was at his nephews sports game when we called. Lucky for us the game was over (his nephews team won) and he was able to pick up the pieces.
He also gave us his business card in case we need a GC in the future, and with all the projects we have, we may need him for a few of them!
It’s amazing how much more brighter the patio is and how much sun we see through our living room! But we do have plans on replacing the awning with a new attached roof. We also power washed the patio to get rid of some of the dirt and grime. I’ll be sharing a tutorial on that in the next post! One thing for sure is that we are truly happy and excited to share the next phase of our project! Also don’t forget to check back on future posts for updates on our back patio.
Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you on the next one!
