5 MAINTENANCE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HVAC UNIT STRONG

This post is about home renovation projects HVAC Maintenance tips.

Recently our HVAC unit died and we are currently in the process of having a replacement unit installed. We were aware that our old HVAC unit was not going to last and over the years did what we could to keep it running as long as it did. My husband is very handy which is lucky for us because he was able to save us thousands of dollars in repairs from our old HVAC unit while it lived. But unfortunately the unit was over 30 years old and eventually went to the big AC Unit in the sky. Thank you for your service Mr. Unit.

People have asked us how we were able to maintain the life of this unit for as long as we did, I decided to share our Top 5 HVAC maintenance tips. These are tips if you are to maintain the unit yourself rather than call someone to do it for you.

1. Change filters

One of the maintenance routines we always stuck to was to change out the filters and replace them with quality filters that will help keep dust and pollen down, especially if you have allergies. A tip for keeping track of when to change your filters, you can set a reminder on your phone or calendar. And you can also write the date you changed the filter on it so when you check you can easily see the last time you change the filters.

2. Air outlet Size

Make sure that the outlets for your unit is sufficient. They cannot be too big or too small because it will make your unit work harder thus wearing down sooner.

3. Drain Trap

Our old HVAC unit was a dinosaur but my hubby always made sure to check the drain trap and clear out any debri. You’d be amazed as to how much filth this thing collects. Before my husband routinely cleaned and maintenance this unit, it hadn’t been touched for years.

4. Thermostat Controls

Check your thermostat controls and any electrical connections you have. Batteries can last 2 years but consider changing them our each year. This will help your unit cool your home as well as prevent any hazards from happening to your unit.

5. Clean and Maintain your Condenser

The best way to maintain your condenser unit is to make sure to remove any debri from the fan, just gently rinse with your garden hose but make sure to be gentle because you don’t want to cause damage to the condenser. You can also wrap your condenser with a tarp and some bungee cord to protect it from the elements in the winter.

Bonus Tip

To keep our electricity costs down and to lengthen the life of our New HVAC unit we keep our temperature at the same temp all summer long. We are comfortable with 75℉, you’d be surprised at how cool our home is and very comfortable. If you prefer an even cooler temp 73℉ is great, but just keep in mind that the lower your temperature setting the harder your unit has to work to keep your house cool. Although I do know of a few people that keep their temp cooler and are fine with it.
